The Barnett Shale field, located in the in Fort Worth, Texas is the largest new onshore natural gas field so far in the U.S. Production since 2003 has quadrupled, to in excess of 1 trillion cubic feet per year. That's adds up to approximately 5% of total U.S. gas consumption. Developing the Barnett shale field has literally changed the face of Fort Worth, as rigs are planted on virtually any vacant land. Gas company land men even approach suburbanites to sign them up for leases to explore for gas on their lots.
