During 2009, Environmental concerns received increasing publicity from activist and grassroots orgainizations such as the Damascus Citizens for Sustainability and the Delaware Riverkeeper Network. Many towns and municipalities turned to western states for advice and guidance about potential environmental issues since shale drilling has already been well underway there for years.

Several activist videos appeared condemning the drilling industry for its seeming indifference to the public's worries about contamination of drinking water. The industry soon responded with its own videos.
