The Hillsboro, WV-based West Virginia Highlands Conservancy is the oldest environmental advocacy group in West Virginia. Since its founding in the 1960s it has been instrumental in spurring several advocacy litigation projects especially as related to strip mining in the state. During 2010, the organization took increasing interest in the environmental aspects of Marcellus shale drilling and published several articles about the subject in its newsletter, The Highlands Voice.
It has also been active in litigation to help prevent natural gas drilling in Chief Logan State Park.
