Range Resources of Fr. Worth, TX has the most experience with MS of any company, and will invest $426 million in Appalachia during 2008. As of approximately April, 2008, it had 12 horizontal wells. The most recent six had produced 5 MCF/day using horizontal drilling techniques. That compares very favorably with the drilling results from the Barnett Shale play in North Texas. Trenton-Black River (TBR)

It is a geological formation. It stretches from Canada to West Virginia.

Contracting note: One can obtain an interest in TBR that would be separate from Marcellus Shale and other sections.

Marcellus Shale (MS)

During 2008 very active leasing activity took place by companies speculating on the eventual production of prolific amounts of natural gas.

It is a layer of rock that has been known to contain gas for more than a century, but it was generally believed to be too uneconomical to extract. New, improved recovery technology, sharper higher natural gas prices in te first half of 2008, and strong drilling results in a similar shale foundation in north Texas have stirred the interest in it.

Pennsylvania has the thickest layer of shale.

In excess of twenty oil and gas companies hare planning to invest $700 million this year in developing the Marcellus Shale. Up to half of the totl will be in Pennsylvania.

MS has 50 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of recoverable natural gas. This is roughly twice what the US used in 2007.
