Clearfield County, Pennsylvania is located in the middle of the state immediately west of Centre County, home of Penn State. The Marcellus shale formation in the county is approximately 6-7,000 feet deep and is about 300 feet thick. According to a July, 2008 report, there were several productive Marcellus wells along the Centre-Clearfield County border. With the Marcellus fairly deep in this area, the gas is under high pressure, and it is a drilling "hot spot."

Some of the companies that had been reported as actively drilling or leasing in Clearfield County include: EXCO Resources, Inc, Rex Energy Corporation, Carrizo Oil and Gas, Chief Oil and Gas, Mid-East Gas, and Little Pine Resources.

According to an August, 2009 report, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection had issued 15 permits for gas wells in the county. So far, eight of the permits had been drilled, but none were producing gas.

By April, 2010 it was reported that there were 30 permitted wells in Clearfield Co. Chest Township was site of some of the wells. Chief Oil & Gas was one of the more active companies in the county.

There is a Halliburton shop near the Woodland exit off I-80.
