Clearfield County, Pennsylvania is locaed in the middle of the state immediately east of Centre County, home of Penn State. The Marcellus shale formation in the county is approximately 6-7,000 feet deep and is about 300 feet thick. According to a July, 2008 report, there are several productive Marcellus wells along the Centre-Clearfield County border. With the Marcellus fairly deep in this area, the gas is under high pressure.

Some of the companies that have been reported as actively drilling or leasing in Clearfield County include: EXCO Resources, Inc, Rex Energy Corporation, Carrizo Oil and Gas, Mid-East Gas, and Little Pine Resources.

There is a Halliburton shop near the Woodland exit off I-80.
