Clearfield County, Pennsylvania is locaed in the middle of the state immediately east of Centre County, home of Penn State. The Marcellus shale formation in the county is approximately 6-7,000 feet deep and is about 300 feet thick. According to a July, 2008 report, there are several productive Marcellus wells along the Centre-Clearfield County border. With the Marcellus fairly deep in this area, the gas is under high pressure, and it is a drilling "hot spot."

Some of the companies that have been reported as actively drilling or leasing in Clearfield County include: EXCO Resources, Inc, Rex Energy Corporation, Carrizo Oil and Gas, Mid-East Gas, and Little Pine Resources.

There is a Halliburton shop near the Woodland exit off I-80.
