In November, 2009 the company announced an exploratory agreement with WhitMar Exploration to develop approximately 25,000 acres of the latter company's prospective leasehold in Luzerne and Columbia counties in northeastern Pennsylvania.

A news report appeared in December, 2009 when EnCana applied for permits to drill three test wells in Luzerne County.

A late December account identified one of the sites that had a pending permit as being on Peaceful Valley Road in Lehman Township. The Township's planning board had been asked to approve a plan for drilling an EnCana test well. The site appears to be the 120 acre Russell Lansberry farm.

Two additional sites were mentioned as being located in Fairmount and Lake townships. The former was on the Edward Buda farm in the Red Rock section of Fairmount Twp. on Route 118 behind the Ricketts Glen Hotel, and the latter Paul and Amy Salansky's property off Zosh Road in Lake Township.

As of May, 2010 construction for an access road to the pad for the Buda well had started. Drilling was expected to begin in July, and production was to commence in October.

The company had promised to perform "before" and "after" water quality testing for properties around the sites and to clean up any contamination that may have been caused by drilling.

EnCana was in the process of securing additional leases in Luzerne Co.

By November, 2010 Encana announced that it had stopped any further development in both Luzerne and Columbia counties. It had drilled two pilot wells in Luzere Co., the aforementioned Buda and Salansky ones, and concluded that commercially viable wells in these two counties were unlikely to be drilled.

EnCana is also active in the Collingwood/Utica shale play in the Michigan Basin through its subsidiary, Petoskey Exploration LLC. It has a leasehold of approximately 250,000 acres in this play acquired at an average price of $150/acre.
