Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based Sylvan Energy, LLC is an independent oil and gas exploration and production company with operations both in Pennsylvania and Michigan. According to its web site, accessed in August, 2010, the company has over 11,000 acres under lease in the Appalachian Basin.

Sylvan has been focusing on shallow geologic formations and is not known to be drilling as of 2010 in the Marcellus shale formation. However, it has identified more than 75 Marcellus drilling locations. The company has drilled more than 400 wells in the Appalachian Basin.

The company was reported in November, 2009 to hold gas leases in Washington Township, Greene County, PA when it sued the township regarding zoning ordinances that it believed were effectively preempted by provisions of the Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Act.

A news account mentioned in August, 2010 that Sylvan held 270 leases in Allegheny County, PA.
