Williamsport, Pennsylvania-based TerrAqua Resource Management LLC was issued a draft discharge permit in May, 2009 for a gas well wastewater treatment plant on the Susquehanna River's West Branch by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PDEP). It was one of eleven planned wastewater plants being reviewed by PDEP along the North and West branches of northcentral Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River. The wastewater was to be generated by Marcellus shale drilling in the area.
In July, 2009 the company proposed a process of thermal evaporation to transform the gas well wastewater into distilled water and salts and other waste into cake.
