A report appeared in April, 2010 about the flaring of an exploratory well after hydro-fracturing it about 30 miles southeast of Traverse City, MI.

Located in Missaukee County, the well is known as Petoskey Pioneer 1-3, and was permitted to a depth of 9,000 feet with a 5,000 foot lateral. The vertical pilot hole was said to have bottomed in the Trenton-Black River just below the Utica shale. It was later clarified in May, 2010 that the well targeted the Collingwood shale formation which also is just below the Utica shale. It had been drilled to a depth of 9,500 feet. Natgas was produced from both the Collingwood and the overlying Utica intervals.

It had initial 30-day average production of 2.5 Mmcf/d, including natural gas liquids constituents and condensate.
