Natural gas leasing in Madison Co. began near the town of Lebanon. Many of the leases there were with Norse Energy, a company that has drilled a approximately 60 wells mainly to the Herkimer formation. Norse also holds leases in in the towns of Hamilton and Nelson. Eight other companies have leased in Madison Co. too, but as of April, 2010 only Norse had ever done any drilling there. So far, only one or two Marcellus shale wells have been drilled in Madison Co.
During 2010, a number of landowners from the Town of Cazenovia and surrounding townships began leasing to gas companies.
There have been 551 natural gas leases* within the county,
and a partial breakdown includes: Town Number ---- ------ Cazenovia 25 DeRuyter 128 Georgetown 141 Nelson 8 * A few leases have also been signed as far north as the towns
of Lincoln and Lenox.
