Madison County is located in central New York. It is bordered on the south by Chenango County, and on the north by Oneida County.

Natural gas leasing in Madison Co. began near the town of Lebanon. Many of the leases there were with Norse Energy, a company that had drilled a approximately 60 wells mainly to the Herkimer formation. Norse also holds leases in in the towns of Hamilton and Nelson. Eight other companies had leased in Madison Co., but as of April, 2010 only Norse had ever done any drilling. There have been a few Marcellus shale wells in Madison Co.
