Canonsburg, Pennsylvania-based CONSOL Energy Inc. (NYSE: CNX) is a multi-fuel producer of energy and provider of energy services primarily to U.S. power producers. It is one of the largest coal mining companies in the U.S. with a dozen bituminous coal mining complexes spread across six states with proven and probable coal reserves in excess of 4 billion tons. CNX Gas Corporation was spun off as an 83% owned subsidiary from CONSOL, and is its cheif operating unit involved in drilling the Marcellus shale formation in Pennsylvania. CNX is a leading Appalachian natgas producer with proven reserves over 1.4 Tcf.

CONSOL was reported in September, 2008 to be an investor along with Atlas Energy LLC of approximately $100 million in the western Pennsylvania counties of Westmoreland and Allegheny.

A late-March, 2010 news account mentioned that CONSOL had obtained the financing to purchase the remaining 16.7% of CNX Gas Corp. that it didn't already own for $965 million, and it planned to do so.
